Garissa terror suspect was nabbed under a bed in one of the rooms in the university, police found him hiding there, a court heard.

The suspect Rashid Charles Mberesero claimed to be a student, but when asked to state the course he was undertaking, he is said to have changed his story and said he had visited a student friend.

Mberesero was discovered by an Anti- Terrorism Unit police Sergent Eric Mwiti and had his clothes hidden at Awsad Mosque where he had sought a place to sleep.

A black bag containing his clothes, a diary and note book was also produced by the anti-terror squad who arrested him after information was given to the police.

The prosecution also confirmed that Mberesero attended prayers at a local mosque three days before the attack.

A witness Kolombo Adao who was an usher at the mosque in Garissa testified that Rashid Charles Mberesero, a Tanzanian national arrived at the mosque for prayers on March 30 last year and became a regular attendant.

Mr Adao told Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo that the suspect had introduced himself as Rashid Ramadhan Dida and that he was Kenyan.

“He came to the mosque as I was opening the door at3.00am and said he wanted to worship and I did not refuse, instead I ushered him in, he was the first to arrive,” Adao told the court.

Adao who has been an usher at the mosque for 22 years also told the court that Mberesero informed him that he had visited his uncle who resides in Garissa but he was chased away since he did not profess to the Islamic faith.

Proceedings continue on March 7.
