The government will give free Wi-Fi services to all Kenyans in all 47 counties, 290 constituencies.

It comes in the wake of several other programs launched in the country including free laptops to children in primary schools; this in a bid to create a population that is technologically empowered.

The government will install proper infrastructure to support this program.

Cabinet Secretary for Information Communications and Technology (ICT) Mr Joe Mucheru revealed this during a parliamentary Kamukuji.

During the presentation, the CS said the roll out of the initiative will be done in liaison with the Members of the National Assembly in their respective constituencies. Each constituency will be supported with four centres in the initial stage.

“This project will transform Kenya and bring the digital dream to a reality,” the CS said adding that “It will bring the youth out of poverty by creating jobs.”

The installation will involve a satellite dish, smart devices, among other accessories.

During the informal seating, the MP for Limuru Mr Chege Kiragu confirmed to his colleagues that a pilot installation had already been set up in his constituency and that it had attracted a lot of attention from the youth.

Present during the meeting was the Speaker of the National Assembly Mr Justin Muturi, Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Mr Aden Duale, Members of Parliament, Principal Secretaries from the Ministry, Eng Victor Kyalo (ICT and Innovation), Mr Sammy Itemere (Broadcasting and Telecommunications) and other senior officials from the Ministry.
