The United Nations has warned South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir of dire consequences if the country slides back to civil war.

The UN also accused President Kirr of breaking a truce that saw the youngest nation on earth regain stability and peace.

The agreement signed by VP Reik Machar and President Kirr bordered on a binding that any political appointments must be consistent with the peace deal that ended nearly two years of civil war.

The warning came a day after Kiir replaced his arch rival Machar with Taban Deng, in a move seen by UN to have the potential to undermine the August peace deal.

“Any political appointments need to be consistent with the provisions outlined in the peace agreement,” UN spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters in New York on Tuesday.

President Kiir’s appointment of Deng came after the president issued an ultimatum last week, requiring Machar to contact him within 48 hours and return to Juba to salvage the peace deal.

Deng is a former ally of Dr Machar.

South Sudan gained independence in 2011 after years of repressive rule under the iron fist of Sudan President Omar Al Bashir wanted at the ICC over crimes against humanity.

Civil war broke out in 2013 when soldiers from Kiir’s Dinka ethnic group disarmed and targeted troops of Machar’s Nuer ethnic group. Machar and commanders loyal to him fled to the countryside where tens of thousands of people died in the conflict that followed. Many also starved to death.
