Doctors have been sentenced to serve a one month jail term for failing to call off the ongoing nationwide strike.

This is a consequence of defying court orders directing them to call of the strike that entered its 72nd day.

Labor and Employment court judge Hellen Wasilwa ruled that the doctors have not demonstrated to court any new and compelling issue or pointed out any mistake or error apparent on the record or any sufficient cause that would warrant review of the court’s order

“There is no sufficient reason why the court should review its order. The orders of this court will now crystallize and you can now start serving your sentences, “Judge Wasilwa ruled.

Doctors were also accused of complying with court orders selectively.

Giving them a window so as to negotiate on behalf of their union members, Judge Wasilwa had asked them to conclude the matter and register a new bargaining agreement in court.

However, that has not happened and as a result the court has effected its jail order.

Meanwhile an application by the KNCHR lawyer Vincent Lempaa to be given more time to go on with the talks was rejected.

Central Organization of Trade Union (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli who led the negotiations was however not in court.

The court had tasked COTU, KMPDU officials, Council of Governors, Treasury, Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) and other Government organs to mediate on the matter and bring an end to the industrial action.
