A fierce battle looms between matatu operators and Governor Mike Sonko over a directive barring PSVs from ‘stepping foot’ at the CBD.
Matatu Welfare Association has moved to court to challenge the order.
In an application filed at the Milimani law courts, the matatu operators say that the county is adamant and keen to cripple their business.
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is quoted alluding that “the said PSVs operators should not expect any notification.”
The welfare says that in order for the said relocation to work and be viable, every stakeholders need to be involved in forging a way forward and as such public participation is paramount which has not been the case.
They however claim that their members are not opposed to the arrangements being but are lamenting the manner and procedure the county is executing that mandate.
“The petitioner’s members should only be moved to termini that actually exist and that are fit to for the purposes not just to arbitrarily cast them out of the city,” they say.
According to the operators, the current pick up and drop off points are strategically placed to ensure security of members of the public and access their various places of work and businesses within the city whether at night or during the day.
They claim that the new proposed terminus are too small and squeezed therefore not able to accommodate even half of the matatu PSVs from one Sacco.
