Two directors of a company associated with a Mandera politician have been charged in Nairobi court with tax evasion amounting to sh876 million.

Ali Hassan Apei and Bashir Hassan Abbey Mamo and Microbit System Limited appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku and denied all the charges levelled against them by the state.

Apei, Mamo and Microbit Systems Limited are accused that on or about June 2015 in Nairobi county being the directors of Microbit systems limited, jointly with others not before court knowingly and unlawfully omitted from the company’s returns an income of Sh273,122,561 an amount they knew or ought to have known should have been included for the year of income 2014.

They are accused that on June 30, 2014 in Nairobi being the directors of Microbit Systems Limited with others not before court, knowingly and unlawfully omitted from the company’s returns an income of Sh193, 438,344 an amount which you ought to have known should have been included for the year of income 2013.

The two directors also accused with others not before court unlawfully failed to pay corporation tax amounting to Sh 58,031,508. They also faced several other fraud charges over the failure to pay taxes offences.

The company has been supplying Mandera, Marsabit County and Ministry of Interior with food commodities in drought prone areas.

The accused persons were released on a cash of Sh1 million each or a bond of Sh2 million each. The company was ordered to pay another cash bail of Sh1 million.
