A Kibera court has allowed the police to hold two suspects arrested with fake currencies totaling to hundreds of millions of shillings, at a house in Makaazi apartments in the upmarket Kilimani neighborhood.
Kibera Principal Magistrate Philip Mutua allowed the police to detain Samuel Maina Wakaba and Boniface Mungai Mwaura for five days to enable them complete Investigations.
Police constable Stephen Kibei told the court that they are seeking to detain the suspect to enable them profile the suspects and liaise with Interpol to ascertain whether they are wanted persons.
He said forwarding their fingerprint to the criminal registry at the DCI-Headquarters to confirm their criminal record, liaise with security agencies within the country to ascertain whether a report of fake currency has been filed by any member of the public and to recover any fake currency in the circulation, requires more time.
He added that detectives from Kilimani received information from the members of the public that there were suspicious persons at Mbaazi apartments along Rose Avenue in Kilimani.
On arrival at the said apartment they managed to arrest the two and recovered a total of 6.8 Million fake US dollars, 490,000 fake Euros, and Sh6.4 million, stashed in metal boxes, during the early morning raid.
Also recovered were jerry cans with an unknown liquid, De La Rue branded badges and a seal, all suspected to be used in printing of the fake currencies. Assorted documents, customs reflector jackets, United Nations and National Treasury stickers were also confiscated.
