Sixteen Boda boda riders accused of sexually assaulting a female motorist in Nairobi will remain in detention for 15 days as police conclude investigations into the ugly incident that occurred last week.

Milimani Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe allowed the application by the police to detain the suspects as they conclude the probe and gather evidence against them.

The court ruled that the nature of the matter brings up controversy and police should be accorded necessary support to conclude the investigations.

“Police should be accorded necessary support to conclude investigations. I am satisfied that the application is merited,” ruled the Magistrate.

The court noted that even though some of the suspects may be exonerated by investigations or during the trial, police need be granted time to conclude investigations.

The suspects were arrested in following an uproar after a video of the riders, molesting the Zimbabwean diplomat went viral. Some of the suspects were identified using the video but the mastermind is said to be on the run.

The incident at Wangari Maathai road led to a crackdown of boda boda riders across the country.
