TIMELINES TO BE FOLLOWED IN FILING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION PETITION.

The Supreme Court has issued guidelines to be followed in challenging the presidential election results ahead of the August 9 general election.

In a notice issued by Chief Justice Martha Koome, the top court reminded unsatisfied candidates or voters that any dispute must be filed within seven days after the election results has been declared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Once the petition has been filed, it should be served to the respondents within 24 hours and the respondents shall respond within four days.

Parties like the Law Society of Kenya, Katiba Institute among others that wish to join the case a friends of the court should file their application within a day.

The pre-trial conference is to be held eight days after the petition has been filed and will be followed by the hearing of the election petition.

CJ Koome said the Apex Court will strictly stick to the timelines to hear and determine the Presidential petition, if any is filed.
