Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has withdrawn a case against a student who was charged with creating a Facebook account in his name in a bid to defraud unsuspecting Kenyans.

Tyson Kibet Kabete, a student at Kabete National Polytechnic has been in custody for the last three months after failing to secure his release after he was charged with creating a fake account to defraud people.

The third-year student appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo where Sonko told court that he had forgiven him and wanted the case withdrawn.

Kibet had been charged with Cybersquatting contrary to section 28 of the Computer Misuse Act.

While seeking to withdraw the case, former Governor told court that the parents approached him saying Kibet was a student and they are from a humble background.

Sonko said the family pleaded with him saying the accused has been in custody for three months since they has not been able to raise cash bail.

“I have decided to withdraw this case because I have forgiven him. No one has coerced me”, Sonko told court.

On the accused part, he apologized to the public for impersonating former governor Sonko.

“I plead with the public to forgive me and thankful that the Governor has forgiven me. I am a student and I pledge to use my skills to better my life”, Kibet told court.

The Milimani principal magistrate marked the case as closed.

“Having considered all submissions by both the complainants and the accused, I hereby withdraw the case against the accused person,” the magistrate ruled.

Kibet has been in jail for three months after failing to raise a cash bail of Sh200,000 or a bond of Sh1 million.
