Two men have been charged with conspiracy to defraud a precious metal dealer of Sh22 million.
Humprey Mulindi Mathahana and Steve Ochieng Odhiambo appeared before Milimani Magistrate and denied the charges of conspiring to defraud the director of Milestone Gemstone Kenya limited, of the millions.
The charge sheet stated that they committed the offence on diverse dates between 3rd day of February and 5 day of March 2021 at unknown place in the country.
It is alleged that they jointly conspired to defraud Emily Silaton Mututua, the director of Milestone Gemstone Kenya Limited Company by falsely pretending that they could sell her Tanzanite measuring 687.283 carats and valued USD 203,436 equivalent to Sh.22,337,273.
The two men claimed that they would ship the precious metals to Dubai.
It was further alleged that on February 5, 2021 at Ministry of Mining offices within Nairobi County, they obtained Tanzanite minerals measuring 4568 carats valued at USD147,553 equivalent to Sh.16,201,319 from Mututua.
The charge sheet stated that on the 5th day of March 2021 at Ministry of Mining offices they further obtained Tanzanite minerals measuring 230,483 carats valued at USD 71,883 equivalent to Sh.7,892,753 from Mututua.
It is alleged that they falsely pretended that they would sell the said Tanzanite minerals measuring 230,483 carats to Dubai.
The court ordered them to deposit bond of Sh.5 million or alternative cash bail of Sh.2 million, to secure their release.
