The Alumni of embattled Moi University School of Law (MUSLA) have threatened to take legal action if the Council of Legal Education (CLE) fails to review the decision to close the Institution’s faculty of law.

Kiplimo Langat, the Chairman of (MUSLA) while addressing the press outside the Milimani Law courts yesterday termed the decision draconian.

“We have raised our concerns over the directions issued by the (CLE) to close the law department for alleged failure to meet the ‘requisite standards to offer law courses,’” said Langat

Langat said that over 1500 students will be affected by the decision. According to him the dreams of these students to become lawyers will be shattered if the school will be close.

“It will be a violation of their rights safeguarded by our constitution, it is for this reason that we are liaising with our learned friends in Eldoret to see that the draconian decision of the CLE is quashed through the court process,” he said.

The Group has threatened to seek orders directing that learning and admission of law students to resume learning.

They claim that the standards set by the CLE to be complied with by the school have already been obeyed with and if there are any other requirements that are yet to be met they should be achieved progressively within a specified time lines.

The Group claims that the school’s law department has been one of the best schools offering law courses in the country and this has been demonstrated in courts, leadership positions and other sectors of the economy.

“The decision is not based on merit but we highly suspect that CLE is being used by other mushrooming universities to maim and kill MOI University for business reasons,” he said.

The Group claims that CLE should be impartial body which should discharge its duties with fairness. “Since all of us graduated from the school we acknowledge that the school has underwent serious changes towards providing better learning environment,” said Langat.
