A man accused of grievously assaulting his pregnant wife has been charged in a Nairobi court.
John Wambugu Wachira denied the charges and was detained till Friday when a ruling on his release on bail will be delivered.
Wachira has been charged with grievous harm contrary to the law.
The court heard that the accused assaulted his wife Juster Kawira Mugambi on February 1, 2016 at Civil Servant Estate in Langata within Nairobi.
The prosecution made an application to have the accused detained claiming that if released he would interfere with the witness.
The police had earlier filed an application seeking to continue detaining the suspect for three more days, saying they were yet to complete investigations.
In her ruling, Magistrate Miriam Mugure said the application lacked merit and she could not find a reason of issuing the order sought.
“This is a case of assault. It is peculiar to seek custodial order on a matter that can be heard while the respondent is released under police bond, let police deal with the matter failure to which they should release him forthwith,”said Mugure.
A video of the six month pregnant woman being battered by the husband was widely circulated on social media prompting a public outcry.
The video clip posted to Youtube shows Wachira dragging Kawira into their house on a cemented floor and stamping on her in a dark room.
Later on, Kawira appeared with a bloody face.
Neighbors took her to hospital after the beating, and reported the matter to police.
The husband is also alleged to have stabbed her in the stomach in a previous incident, and she lost her pregnancy.
In court yesterday, police said they needed more time with the suspect because Kawira is yet to fill a P3 form to assist with investigations.
