Airtel Kenya employees who were laid off have contested the decision terming it illegal and unprocedural.

Some of whom include Airtel’s senior executives have moved to the Labour Relations Court through their lawyer Duncan Okach saying that they were not consulted before they were sacked.

Employees want the court to declare that their alleged termination on account of redundancy was unprocedural and unfair.

According to the telecommunication company, the employees numbering 34 were redundant.
They accuse their former employer of not following the due process and disregarding seniority in time and skill and reliability of each employee.

“They said termination on account of redundancy was therefore unprocedural and illegal,” they say.
They said that despite issuing an intention to sue notice, Airtel has failed, refused or neglected to admit liability or reverse the decisions and actions to settle the claim.

The ex-employees want Airtel compelled to reinstate them and pay debts that they owe the banks in respect to cars they were advised to buy.

They also want to be issued with a certificate of service and an order directing Airtel to see to the payment of house allowance to every employee calculated as per the duration worked by each employee.

Airtel is also accused of not informing the labour office of their intention to lay off these employees.
Besides, the telecom is also accused of not involving the claimants in consultations regarding their redundancy.
