Five police constables and a crime preventer seen beating up supporters of opposition leader, Dr Kizza Besigye last week have been charged for smearing police image.

They have also been accused of unnecessary exercise of authority by a police court.

At the police headquarters at Naguru, Kampala, constables Willy Kalyango, Sula Kato, Moses Agaba, Dan Muhangi and Robert Wanjala were summoned and charged.

Mr Dan Tandeka, a crime preventer and a former guard in Iraq, was also charged with the same offences before police court chairman, Mr Denis Odongpiny.

The punishments for the charges range from demotion, imprisonment and or dismissal.

All the suspects pleaded not guilty.

The six and others (not present in the police court) are alleged to have beaten Dr Besigye’s supporters using sticks last Tuesday andWednesday at Kalerwe Market in Kawempe Division and Namasole Road on Entebbe Road in Rubaga Division in Kampala.
