University of Nairobi students chair Babu Owino now accuses police of denying him crucial documents.

He claimed police have denied him witness statements in an assault case.

Babu, as he is fondly known among his peers is accused of assaulting his competitor in the last students elections Mike Jacobs and causing him grievous harm.

He told Kibera Magistrate Derrick Kuto that his efforts to get the statements from the investigating officer had bore no fruits.

After being charged, Babu was given a Sh200,000 bail.

He also wants a copy of the P3 filed by Mr Jacobs to prepare for his defence.

The court had earlier ordered the prosecution to give him all documents they would be using against him in court.

Five witnesses, including a police doctor, are set to testify, prosecutors say.

“I do not want excuses. Make sure you get all documents today,” Mr Kuto said.

Proceedings resume September 22.
