CITY ASKARIS ARRESTED IN GOVERNOR MIKE SONKO’S PURGE ON ROGUE COUNTY OFFICIALS.

A threat by Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko on city askaris who mete out violence on hawkers has been actualized.

Seven of this askaris have been arraigned in court and charged with robbery with violence.

The accused Philemon Cheburet Kimei, Peter Ndungu Gitau and Bernard Maina Kogi were charged that on the 29th October 2017 along Forest Lane in Ngara within Nairobi County, while armed with offensive weapons namely knives and an axe robbed Cyrus Ndumia Maingi Sh600.

Immediately after the time of such robbery, they threatened to use actual violence to the said Cyrus Ndumia Maingi.

John Ndukuyu Muchoki, Maurice Kisoi Mwonga, David Ndome Mwangi, Wabwoba Maruti are alleged that on 29 October along 5th street Eastleigh within Nairobi County jointly with others not before court being armed with offensive weapons pangas, rungus and metal bars robbed a hawker Benson Macharia Githinji Sh150 and assorted vests valued at Sh20, 000 and immediately or after the time of such robbery threatened to use actual violence.

The seven appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Miriam Mugure.

The four are also accused of robbing 14 pairs of bed sheets valued at 5,600 from Jeremiah Wambugu Njoki.

John Ndukuyu Muchoki, Maurice Kisoi Mwonga, David Ndome Mwangi, Wabwoba Maruti who were charged with five other criminal charges were released on a cash bail of  Sh100,000.

The hearing of their case is slated for November 29.

The court released the other three accused askaris on Cash bail of 100,000 and a bond 300,000 shillings each.

The accused were arrested on Sunday after Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko received a tipoff from members of public that a group of city county askaris were robbing people.

The governor went on patrol within the areas and witnessed the alleged robbery to city residents and requested officers from flying squad to arrest the officers who were charged in court today.

The case resumes on November 30th.
