An insurance agent with Directline Insurance Company suspected to have facilitated the procurement of a third party cover for a motor vehicle used by Dusit Hotel Complex terror attack has been detained for 15 days.

This is to allow police complete investigations into possible role of the company over the attack in which 21 people died.

Nairobi court Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku allowed police to detain Zipporah Wambui Karanja for two weeks.

The agent was arrested on 23 January Kamulu area along Kagundo road due to her possible involvement in aiding and abetting terrorist attack that occurred on 15 and 16 of January at Dusit Hotel Complex Riverside in Nairobi.

The insurance agent is believed to have facilitated the procurement of the insurance cover for motor vehicle KCN 340E Toyota Racita which was used by the attackers.

The investigating officer further said they believe she facilitated in procuring insurance cover KCP 872R which was recovered from the home compound of the main attacker Ali Salim Gichunge.

Inspector Shedrack Mumba told the court that they needed to confirm details from the suspect on the details of the person who procured covers for the motor vehicles in questioning and their possible connections to the terrorist attack.

Detectives also said they discovered Mobile phones belonging to the suspects and the police are currently forensically examining them. He also said reports are yet to be to be obtained and analysed.

The court heard that intelligence report indicates that the attackers were assisted by others in planning and executing the attack and there is a need to carry detailed interviews with the suspects and the associates to the attackers (once arrested) with view of finding out their coconspirators.

The suspect is being investigated over several terrorism and related offences. They include conspiracy to commit terrorism act, being a member of terrorism group and provision of property and services for commission of terrorists act against the law
