Nairobi County Assembly speaker Benson Mutura Kangara has been arraigned before a Milimani court over allegations of stealing public funds.
Mutura appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Esther Kimilu.
The speaker, however did not plead to the charges after the court was informed of an application pending before the High Court, seeking to stop his prosecution.
His lawyers Duncan Okatch told the court that they had filed the matter at the High Court and were waiting for the outcome.
Okatch requested the court to release his client on bail pending the hearing and determination of the application.
Mutura is accused of stealing Sh 5,348,984, the property of County Government of Nairobi. The money allegedly came to his possession by virtue of his employment.
The speaker is alleged to have committed the offence between February 1, 2021 and February 28, 2022 in Nairobi.
He was released on a cash bail of Sh 500,000, pending the plea on May 16.
