A Liberian national has been charged with stealing 6.48 kgs bars of gold worth over Sh54 million increasing the number of gold scammers from the West African nation.

Carace Ownze Toomey appeared before Milimani Senior magistrate Bernard Ochoi and denied the charges.

Toomey is accused of conspiring with others to steal the gold bars valued at USD 408,229, which belonged to Shammugam Sundar Darmaraju.

It is alleged that he committed the offence on diverse dates between 30th March 2023 and 4th April 2023 at unknown place in Kenya.

The Liberian allegedly stole the gold bars at Jomo kenyatta International Airport while on transit.

Toomey had previously opposed to plead to the charges saying he needed advise as well as verify documents given by the investigation officer.

Several people have charged in connection over the gold fraud and sources from DCI indicate more to be charged next week over stealing of the said gold.

The case will be mentioned on 17th April 2023 for consolidation with the other related cases.
