Seven employees of supermarket in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area have been charged with tax evasion after they were found with thousands packets of smuggled milk.

The seven employees of Amana Wholesalers Limited were charged with being possessing an uncustomed milk worth Sh6.7 million.

Ahmed Ibrahim Abdile, Osama Abdikarim Mohamed, Abdimalik Mohamed Abdulahi, Abdiwahid Osman Kasim, Dahir Hussein Abdi, Nabusuwa Isaac and Said Abdulahi Dirie appeared before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi and denied the charges.

They were arrested on January 23, at Amana Wholesalers Ltd at Eastleigh area.

The accused persons were also accused of importing dairy products into the country without a valid permit from the Kenya Dairy Board (KDB).

The court heard that the accused persons had also omitted to pay the import levy amounting to Sh 1 million contrary to the regulations of the KDB.

Among the dairy products were 196 tins of Nura powder of 2.5 Kgs each, 66 tins of Brookside powder milk of 2.5 Kgs each, 915 cow and Gate baby formula powder milk of 400 grams each, 818 tins of hilwa condensed milk of 2.5 kgs each, 1008 tins of nan powder milk of 400 grams each among others.

The accused persons pleaded with the court to release them on bail stating that they were only employees of the retail shop.

The court released them on bond of Sh 2 million with an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000.

The matter will be mentioned on 7th February.
