Three police officers alleged to have aided self-proclaimed serial killer Masten Wanjala escape from custody have been charged.

The trio inspector Philip Mbithi, Constable Kamakia Boniface and Precious Mwende appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Benard Ochoi and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

They are accused that on the night of October 12 and 13 this year, at Jogoo Road police station, they jointly aided Wanjala to escape from lawful custody. Wanjala was later killed by a mob in Bungoma, a few days after his mysterious escape from the police station.

The three are also jointly charged with neglect of duty. The charge stated that being police officers in the public service public, they willfully neglected to prevent Wanjala, a murder suspect, from escaping, as required by National Police Service Act.

They were released on a cash Sh150,000 each plus one contact person or an alternative bond of Sh300,000 each. The officers were arrested on October 13 over allegations of aiding Wanjala escape.

They were later released on bail following an application by their lawyer Danstan Omari.
