A University of Nairobi law student has been charged with obtaining Sh1.2 million under the guise that she had obtained a tender with Chandaria Industries Limited.

Jane Njeri Karinge appeared before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi and denied the charges.

Karinge is accused of obtaining the money from Elizabeth Wawira Gichumu, an offence she allegedly committed between April 4, and July 31, 2019.

Karinge allegedly said she had secured a tender from Chandaria Industries, a fact she knew to be false.

Karinge is also charged with two counts of uttering the said purchase order in April and May 2019 purporting it to be genuine order issued and executed by the said Chandaria.

While applying for bail, lawyer Danstan Omari pleaded with the court   to have the student released with reasonable bail terms since she is a single mother who is still breastfeeding and is supposed to start her exams next week.

The court further heard that she is also a mother to a toddler who is still breast feeding, which should be considered by the court.

The court granted her a bond of Sh500,000 with alternative cash bail of Sh 100,000. She was also ordered to provide one contact person upon payment of cash bail.
