Mount Kenya University has sued Council for Legal Education over suspension of Bachelor of Laws program in the institution until a decision on its accreditation statues is determined.

The University claims that it was accredited to offer legal education and training on 2010 and Council of Legal Education letter on January 7, 2016 to suspend the program was unconstitutional.

It claims that when the Council wrote the letter, it had already admitted qualified applicants to its Bachelor of Laws program and the students had reported to the institution on January 4.

MKU states that the students who have already been admitted in the institution will be denied their right to education following Council for legal Education directive.

The institution further claims that it may be sued by the students who have already been admitted in the institution.

MKU claims that only the Commission for University Education has been mandated to inspect Universities, accredit and inspect university programs in Kenya.

The University further states that the Commission carried out inspection of its Nairobi Campus last year and was informed that it had met the minimum standards.

It claims that the Council of Legal Education move to suspend the Bachelor of Law Program in the institution will paralyze operation in the institution as it will have to lay off some lecturers whose serves will not be required and experience a loss of sh 650 million which was used in establishing the School of law.

Through their lawyer Fredrick Ngatia, MKU wants the high court to quash the decision by CLE directing the institution to suspend admission of students to its Bachelor of law program.
