Four police officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Lang’ata have been charged with robbery with violence.

Anthony Muvaka Mwanza, Cornelius Stephen Wambua, Tom Omomdi Otieno, and Kennedy Omondi Odero appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Wendy Kagendo for robbery with violence charges.

The four officers are accused of violently robbing Vincent Ochieng Odembo of Sh40,000 and $2,400 (Sh272, 260) on February 6. They allegedly committed the robbery at Nextgen Mall on Mombasa Road while armed with AK-47 rifles.

The charges stated that they abducted the businessman near NextGen Mall on Mombasa Road and forcefully transferred Sh40,000 from his mobile phone before they proceeded to his house where they took a further US$2,400. They later abandoned him on Mombasa Road.

When Odembo went to report the incident at Akila Police Station, the businessman found the same Subaru the officers were using, parked at the station.

He later reported the matter and even informed the OCS at the station, but he did not get any help, prompting him to file a complaint at the DCI Headquarters where Director George Kinoti ordered for their arrest and prosecution.

The officers admitted to have arrested the businessman but said the Sh40,000 was lunch he bought them. They denied taking the dollars from his house.

They were released on a cash bail of Sh300, 000.
