Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji has withdrawn charges against director of an insurance company accused of stealing Sh5 million.

The DPP withdrew the charge against Cecilia Bridget Rague who is also the chief executive officer of Underwriting Africa Insurance Brokers.

“It is hereby ordered that the charges is hereby withdrawn under section 204 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) and accused acquitted,” ordered Chief Magistrate Susan Shutubi

The court further ordered that the surety is hereby discharged and documents be returned back.

The plea against her had initially been differed to another date to enable the investigating officer arrest her co-directors.

According to a charge sheet, Rague allegedly stole Sh4,659, 934 from Sanlan General Insurance limited which had been trusted to them by remittance as reinsurance premiums to continental reinsurance Ltd.

It was alleged that Rague and Underwriting Africa Insurance Brokers committed the offence on December 6, 2019 at NCBA Westlands branch in Nairobi, being agents of Sanlan General Insurance limited. She was accused of stealing the money jointly with others who were still at large.

She was also accused that on the same dates at NCBA Westlands branch in Nairobi she stole Sh2, 011,760, which had been entrusted to them for remittance as reinsurance premiums to Ghana reinsurance Ltd.

The further faced charge of stealing Sh2.4 million belonging to Sanlan General Insurance Ltd which had been entrusted to them for remittance as reinsurance premiums to CICA reinsurance.

She and other representative of the company were expected to appear before Milimani Chief Magistrate to plead to the five charges of stealing by agent.
