Senior officials of Sarrai Group including its owner Sarabjit Singh Rai have won a reprive after the appellate court stopped bid to sentence them for disobeying a court order.

Rai together with Rakesh Kumar and Stephen Kihumba were found guilty of contempt of court for disobeying a directive issued last year, for them to suspend operations at Mumias Sugar company.

The trio were to appear before High Court Judge Josephine Mongare for sentencing this week. Justice Dorah Chepkwony ruled the Uganda based sugar miller continued to operate despite being ordered to cease operations.

However, the officials obtained an order from the Court of Appeal, stopping the sentencing.

Justices Mohamed Warsame, Kathurima M’Inoti and Imaana Laibuta suspended the execution of the High Court ruling that cited them for contempt.

“In the meantime, there shall be a temporary order of stay of execution of the ruling and order of the High Court of Kenya at Nairobi dated 27th April, 2023 and delivered on 28th April, 2023 until
22nd September, 2023,” ruled the three appellate judges.

The sentence was postponed following the new development.
