Lawyers have protested the move by the Judicial Service Commission to shortlist only six out of 14 people who applied to be Kenya’s next Chief Justice.

Law Society of Kenya president Isaac Okero on Wednesday said that JSC must explain the criteria they used to lock out the other eight candidates.

Giant names like Supreme Court judge Jackton Ojwang, former anti-corruption czar Aaron Ringera and vocal human rights activist Makau Mutua were not shortlisted.

Those shortlisted for the top job are Supreme Court Judge Smokin Wanjala, court of appeal judges Msagha Mbogoli, Alnashir Visram, Roselyne Nambuye and David Maraga, and senior counsel Nzamba Kitonga.
